I knew when I married him a year ago that he had ,000 in student loan debt and doesn't even have his degree. And I'm just as responsible as him for running my credit cards up over ,000 from the wedding and honeymoon. (we had to use my credit cards, he doesn't have good credit) And we both have a bad habit of living outside our means. I don't mean nice clothes or a nice cars. We live in a tiny one bedroom apartment and both drive 20 year old cars. But we like to go out allot and go on vacations we really can't afford.
But seeing the credit card bills were getting larger not smaller, I told him we can no longer use them. At all. That we would have to try and pay for everything in cash. Well once again I see he's used them. Now I can see he's only using then for gas to work and trips to the super market. But each time he offers to go to the store to pick something up he's lead me to believe he had money to cover these things. And his work is so far from where we live ,that its almost costing us more money in gas, than is worth it. And he's been the (my) credit card for this.
I've talked to him about this before and I thought he understood. And now I'm trying to get him to understand that, that kind of behavior is living a lie. That he's lying to me by not "mentioning" to me that he's used the credit card again. This last bill I just got, we made a payment of 5 dollars and then he used it for 5 dollars and our finance charge is around and the card is maxed at ,500. I can't get him to understand we can't keep living like this.
It's so rare to find a man that doesn't grasp the concept of this kind of money denial. It's usually women that have issues with credit cards and living outside their means.
Before I got married I had a great credit score and zero credit card debt. Now my cards are maxed out and my credit score is fair at best.
I've only been married for 14 months now and I obviously married for love, not money. But I didn't think I was gonna be in debt the rest of my life. Combined we barely make ,000 a year and we're talking about having kids. I'm 38 and he's 39. So it's not something I want to put off too much longer.
How can I get him to understand that the first step to us getting out of debt is to stop using the credit cards and be honest with me about when you have used them? Aside from these money problems he's a very good man. I just don't think his father taught him about how to be responsible with his money.

Say you charge 0 on the card and pay only 0 when payment is due. You charge NOTHING on the credit card the next month, and after the statement closes, you're imposed a finance charge.

To re-establish the grace period, do you have to pay 0? Or just the 0 principal? Or what?

I paid the card off in a large lump sum on 06/26/09 - I called the CC company today to inquire about a finance charge that "appeared" on my bill (which I was offered a lame excuse) - I asked the person on the other end how soon after I make the hideous finance charge payment can I close my credit card and the representative told me that the company had already closed my account on July 14th!

How will this look on my credit report? Is there any recourse for me to go through regarding this stupidity? Ive never been late, over the limit and I always pay way more than the minimum.

This is thoroughly disappointing - is that fair that they can close my account after I have paid it off?

I was excited when Washington Mutual used to let me track my credit score online as a perk to my account. I was bummed out when Chase took over and ended that feature. Are there any other credit cards that offer free score tracking?
WaMu let me track my score through the 3 major reporting agencies. It would be awesome to find another card that lets me do that.

I have a rather large expense coming up (~,000), & I would like to know how a balance transfer will affect my personal situation. I pay all my cards in-full, but with this large expense coming up, I would like to execute my first balance transfer, without having to empty my Savings account.

Game plan:

- Use my 2% cash-back card to pay for the ,000 purchase. (0 cash back)
- Transfer the balance to another cash back card offering 2.99% for the life of the transfer.
- Take ,000 out of my savings & pay down 50% of the balance.
- Make large monthly payments on the balance for 3-6 months, until I have paid it off.

My problem is this: The card I am transferring the balance to, is my favorite & most used card. Offering 5% cash on gas, 5% airline, 2% grocery, & 1.25% everywhere else. I would like to continue using the card after I transfer the balance.

My question is this: If I continue to use my card, & pay off NEW purchases of gas & grocery in-full, will I be assessed the regular finance charge APR of 13.99% because my balance is not "{content}" at the end of the month?

My ideas are these:

1. If my assumption above is correct, I can continue to use the card & paying off the new balance without penalty. As long as I continue making the minimum payments on the balance transfer side of the statement as well.

Example: ,000 balance @ 2.99% with a minimum payment of 2% of the balance. 2% of balance = + ~.50 in interest = .50. New gas & grocery purchases = 0. If I make a MINIMUM payment of 7.50, I will not be assessed any interest @ 13.99%, only the .50 on my 2.99% transfer, correct?

2 If my assumption above is NOT correct, I would have to pay down the balance transfer card to {content}, transfer the balance, & not use it at ALL until the balance transfer was paid off. This way the only interest I would pay would be the 2.99%, correct?

Like I said, I'm a newbie to balance transfers, so if there are other options or if my ideas are way off, please feel free to enlighten me

I have a circuit city card and have a computer and a tv purchase on there with no interest financing. I also have various other things on there collecting finance charges. If I made a large payment would I be allowed to pay off the items accumulating interest instead of the items with no interest? Because know when I make payment all of it goes towards the tv and the computer and they are just piling on the finance charges on the other items.

I have a Chase credit card. I paid my balance in full last month. Now this month, I get a statement saying I owe one dollar. I made no purchases between last month and this month and I paid the balance in full. Yet, they are saying I owe one dollar.
I called and the man told me that even if you start out with a zero balance, you then make a purchase of say 300 bucks, you get the statement, you pay it on time and in full (300 bucks), you will still get a statement the next month saying you owe the one dollar finance charge.
Have you ever heard of this?
This is crazy. If you pay the balance in full and on time, you should not have to pay any finance charge.
Tomk,
I see what you mean about the few days but that is why they call it a grace period.
I should also add that the man from Chase agreed to remove the dollar charge but he said it was a one-time thing. I just won't use this card anymore.
Clarification: he said that removing the dollar charge was a one-time thing and that they won't remove it again.

I've been using my Mastercard for a long time and in the last six months or so, I've noticed they are charging me a "finance charge" every month or so. This is separate from the interest charges. Up to now they've never done this to me.

I am wondering if this has anything to do with Citicards whining about their financial solvency after they received my tax money to bail them out. So are they just looking for more ways to squeeze money out of me?
