why won't my wireless internet card connect to unsecured networks in range?

i have a dell laptop that came with a wireless internet card. normally the card will find all wireless networks in range, including secured and unsecured networks. it will usuually auto-connect with the unsecured networks, like netgear or linksys, but sometimes it just sits there, doesn't autoconnect, and when i try to manually connect, it just keeps trying over and over without ever connecting. retarting the computer and disabling/enabling the wireless card don't help. any ideas?

Picking up the signal and being able to use it are two different things. Usually receiving is more sensitive than sending. Also check the order in which past wifi connects are listed; changing their order may produce better results.

If it always happens with the same networks it maybe that the router is stopping you from connecting to it and have nothing to do with your laptop.
