    You don’t have to keep it. Cut the card up. Call the isssuer and tell them you want to cancel. Follow up with a letter stating you want to close the account.

    You can always cancel the card or shred it. If you shred the card, it might increase your credit to have one in good standing. However, you don’t want too many either. You also need to be careful when applying for credit. Each inquiry cost you around 2 pts off your credit score.
