Why are you afraid it will affect your score, do you know what your current score is? Have you been applying for credit lately? You can request a free credit report once a year. So, maybe you need to check that out first, before you apply for a card.
I would suggest you not for several reasons. First, even if you don’t get the card, it will still show the credit inquiry on your credit report. These inquiries can lower your credit score. Second, credit card usage can spiral out of control very quickly and very easily. You have to be very careful with them.
Have you checked your credit score lately to see exactly where you stand? You can go through FICO to see your scores and they will give you a detailed explaination of why they gave you the score. It’s the most accurate public scoring company too.
They’re also having a sale on scores through the 30th of this month.
I included the direct link below.
Your score goes down a little for inquires, but that only makes up 10% of your score. Too many applications for credit will tank your score, so only apply once and dont’ keep applying if you are turned down. Paying your bills on time makes up 35% of the score.
My son started his credit line by applying at American Eagle outfitters. They approved him for 100.00
He bought and paid on time. Within about 3 months, he applied for a capitol one. they gave him a 300.00 limit.
He bought and paid on time every time.
Next step, he applied at HHGregg and they approved him for 1250.00
All this and his score is only 601.
The trick is to start SMALL and work your way up to bigger cards and credit lines. You must pay on time every single time and NOT max out the card.
Sure, you can check your credit report like several posters have mentioned. Everyone is entitled to 1 free report (from each of the 3 major credit bureaus) per year at http://www.annualcreditreport.com. But even after you look at your credit report and get your credit score – it still won’t tell you which credit card companies will approve you – and which ones won’t.
If you have a general sense of your credit rating (excellent, good, average, poor), you should be able to find an appropriate credit card for your credit history. Most credit card sites categorize credit cards by "credit rating" which can assist you in choosing an offer.
Even if you’re not approved, it won’t have a HUGE impact on your credit score. Sure, the credit inquiry will show up for several months and may have a slightly negative impact – but I wouldn’t worry about it too much. If I were you, I would find an offer and give it a try. If you aren’t approved, try another offer – or wait. It won’t take long for the inquiries to clear and your credit score will be back to normal shortly.
Here’s one of many places to compare offers: http://www.asapcreditcard.com
