Working in retail. How to offer a credit card ?
The store I work for is now pushing us to offer credit cards applications to every single client and the ones with better performance will get more hours. I am having a hard time finding the right words to close the deals.
What techniques or phrases you use that you think you get better results when you use them .
Thank you very much.

Stuff an application in every bag. Don’t ask if they want it, just tell them that you’re giving them an application, and briefly explain the benefit, i.e. they can earn gift certificates for the store. Whatever the gimmick is your store is using, but boiled down to one sentence.
let’s sign you up for the store’s card, then take out an application and hand them a pen
You don’t want to say its a credit card. You want to express the one or two major benefits that the customer will get if they use the card.
You must be working for Target. Tell the supervisor that you need help in this area, its his/her job. Otherwise, you aren’t getting all the tools you need to manage your job properly.
Sometimes it helps to start with a question. "How would you like to get 10% off this purchase right now?" "Great! When you apply for a store card you get an automatic 10% off this purchase. The application takes about 2 minutes. Let me get you a pen."
You can also just hand them an application and then say, "if you fill out this store card application I can get you 10% off your purchase right now."
If they say they have bad credit you say, "It doesn’t matter. You’ll get 10% off just for applying." (if that’s true)
When making a pitch it’s always good to sound confident. If you assume you’re going to be rejected then you will be because you’ll come across as timid. If you act excited (even if you’re not) and enthusiastic then the customer will get caught up in it.
You’ll only get about 1 out of 10 who want the card. Don’t take it personally. Just plug along and work on phrases that sound comfortable to you. And remember. If you believe it’s a good deal then you’ll sound confident. If you think it’s not a good deal then the customer will pick up on it.
The type of card you choose is dependent upon how you plan on paying your card and what you’re looking for. If you plan on paying your balance in full each month (and they calculate interest based on your average daily balance for one statement cycle instead of over a 2 month billing period) then there is no reason for you not to do cash back or points because even though those cards have higher interest rates if you’re paying off in full every month by the payment due date you’re not going to be charged finance charges.
